It's International Rabbit Day today and we're absolutely bonkers about rabbits here at Dragons & Daisies as you can tell with our Determined Bunny tee. What's not to love about bunnies; they're super cute, fluffy, smart and did I mention cute?
In fact, my two littles have been trying to convince me we 'need' one (or three)! I'm trying to convince them that they can get a couple of rabbits when they're old enough to actually look after them themselves....seems to have kept them at bay....for now!
So, in highlight of this special day we have compiled a list of 15 fun rabbit facts for the kids:
1 - A female rabbit is called a doe.
2 - A male rabbit is called a buck.
3 - A young rabbit is called a kit (or kitten).
4 - Rabbits chew 120 times per minute.
4 - Rabbits live in groups and in fact should be kept in pairs as they love company.
5 - The European rabbit lives underground, in burrows. A group of burrows is known as a warren.
6 - More than half of the world’s rabbits live in North America.
7 - Rabbits are very clean animals who groom themselves and their bonded partner, from head to toe around five times a day!
8 - Rabbits have a lifespan of around 10 years.
9 - Rabbits are herbivores (plant eaters).
10 - Rabbits are born with their eyes closed and without fur.
11 - Rabbits have long ears which can be as long as 10 cm (4 in).
12 - When a rabbit is very happy, it jumps up into the air, twisting and flicking its feet and head. This movement is known as a binky!
13 - Rabbits are crepuscular which means they snooze all day and are most active in the early morning and in the evening.
14 - Rabbits use the large surface area of their ears to help regulate body temperature.
15 - Rabbits have good night vision and can see movement from long distances. They can see things to the side, behind or above them without even moving their heads.
I don't know about you but I've just learned two new words; binky and crepuscular!!
If you know any other fun rabbit facts please let us know in the comments.
